It depends on where in the south of england you are travelling from. Let's Say for arguments sake it's Southampton. In that case the distance from Southhampton Town Centre to the South Pole is 9,709 miles. However, the distance to the edge of antarctica is 8,305 miles.

That is precisely measured on google earth, however if u wanted to calculate the distance then there is no need to use the ridiculous method described above. There is a far simpler way to calculate it which has nothing to do with trigonometry, And in any case, the radius of the earth is more like 6,400 kilometres, not the figure quoted by the poster above.

Ok 1st of all, the south of england in nowhere near 55 degrees north. That is more like the position of Southern Scotland! Southampton is actually more like 51 degrees north.

All you need to know to calculate the distance to 90 degrees south is that the circumference of the earth is roughly 24,800 miles when circulating over the poles. Therefore 1 degree = 68.88' (recurring) miles (24,800/360).

Then just add 90 to 51 = 141 and times that by 68.88'

141*68.88' = 9,713. That's just 4 miles off the exact distance i measured it to be on google earth :). It's a simple calculation. No need to dilly dally around making pointless irrelavant calculations.

This calls for a little trig. The UK is about 55 degrees north of the equator. The south pole is obviously 90 degrees south so you get a total of 145 degrees. 180 degrees = pi radians so this calls for a proportion problem:
x/3.14 radians = 145/180
x = 145 * 3.14 / 180
x = about 2.53 radians

Since a radian is equal to the radius of a circle, and the earth is spherical, now all we must do is multiply the radius of the earth with 2.43. The earth's radius is about 3,600 km so
2.43 * 6,360 = 15454.8 km

Convert km into miles
15454.8 / 1.6093 = 9603.43 miles from the UK to Antarctica (approximately)

Your answer will vary depending on where exactly in the UK and Antarctica you are talking about. My answer is just an approximation.

If you go due south from the south of England, about 10,000 miles, perhaps a little less.
