You start off as 2 entities, a portion ( X or y chromosome ) in a spermatozoa, and a portion ( Y chromosome ) in an egg. When the 2 get together, you become a cell, which divides again & again to form your body.
We don't know exactly when you start to become "you", but most folks don't recall anything about the first few months ( or even years ) of their lives.
So, the answer to what you were before birth is simple -- the difficult question is WHO you were before you were born.
That's why we have religion.....for better or worse....

With quite a lot of people things start when Mummy and Daddy meet in the pub and have a lot to drink making them feel happy and laugh a lot. Then Daddy being a gentleman walks Mummy home and either on the way or when the arrive at her place they start necking and end up having sex or as we say in this place... playing hide the carrot. Then the carrot gets fed up with the game and to show his disapproval throws up deep into your mummys little hole proving to her its not supposed to be used as an ashtray or a saltpot after all. Nature takes its course and eventually you come out squalling and screaming and filling nappies. If you want things explaining better then write using a plain brown envelope to, Wee Daft Wullie, Home for the bewildered, Nottingham and we can arrange to meet when I can show you if you are a lady type woman yourself. If you are male, you will have to get by with drawings done on paper with crayon, (They don't allow us to use pencils or anything sharp).................

probably depends if you believe in reincarnation. If so you float around for a while as a spirit, get bored, get boren, live, die, repeat.
Other than that maybe its like dreaming until you wake in mummys tummy?

According to most christian relgions your soul is in heaven with God. When you ae born God crys and the humans rejoice. when you die your soul returns to Heaven where they then rejoice and we cry.
