Is it true that north carolina is growing rapidly? Is it a decent state to live in ...or does it have a high cost of living?

Housing is more expensive in the metro areas, which is where most of the high paying jobs are. An example of an average rent would be a 3br apt or home renting between 1100-1400/mo. The same type of places could be found for about 800/mo, but your neighborhood would not be as nice/safe/quiet/clean.

Smaller towns (approx 30,000 people) are much cheaper, but the only nice jobs would be at a university or a hospital.

The western and eastern parts of the state are economically depressed, compared to the piedmont (central) part of the state.

Decent place to live? I dunno. Do you like conservatives? If not, you'd probably want to live in Charlotte, Durham, Raleigh or Chapel Hill. These cities are pretty progressive, especially Chapel Hill.
