Ok, the countries in the EU are Belgium, The Netherlands, and Luxemburg. Is Holland a state in the Netherlands? Does it describe a region? I know two states are North Holland and South Holland, but when people say holland, what are they refering to?

Holland" is often used in English and other languages to mean the whole of the Netherlands.

BenElux= Belgium (BE), the Netherlands (NE) and Luxembourg (LUX)
Benelux describes these three countries together
