I've always had a mentor in life, of various sorts. Be it a BF of my mother, or a friend of the family, or personal friend. It seems I always seek out, or find a friend who is very capable as a mentor.

I've talked to other people, and have gathered, to some degree, that this is not a overly-common life route.

Why? Or why not?

It sounds like you were missing a mentor during your informative years and are now trying to make up for that. I don't think there is really anything wrong with that as long as you are bringing something to the relationship as well and not just taking.
