Yep! Good friends of mine had 1 scan at 8 weeks and listened to the heartbeat though their entire pregnancy... their next scan wasn't until 36 weeks when they found out there were twins (this is also back awhile ago when they did not do the 20 week scans)!
Another couple I know had a scan at 12 weeks and saw their little baby, at a scan around 26 weeks they found out they were having twins! The twins will be 2 years old in April!
Both couples had already puchased everything and had to return everything for doubles!

A friend of mine thought she was having twins. But the doc didn't see anything. Then at 8 months she was huge so they did another scan and the tech saw two babies.
Then she gave birth, and they waited, and waited, and waited. There was only one baby.
Ultrasounds are only as good as the person doing them and babies can be shy.

I have heard of it. In fact I have heard of not finding out until much later. Because one twin is usually smaller, it is easier for them the "hide" under or behind their twin and not be detected. It is actually more common when there are 3 or more fetuses.

yep Ive heard of this if the babys heart beats are in rhythm with each other and one is hiding behind the other it can go un-noticed until the 20 week scan! Only way to be sure now is one of these 3d scans but they only have them at private clinics at te moment!

I believe it is possible not to see two babies at a scan if one is blocking the other but rare. If carrying twins you would probably be much bigger for dates than someone carrying a single pregancy.

(we only saw one bean at our first 9 week scan...)
