Generally speaking;

Directors have Managers reporting to them and they report to Executives.
Senior Managers have managers reporting to them and they report to Directors or Executives.
Leads report to Managers or Supervisors and have individual workers reporting to them.

"head of" can be any of the above

This varies from company to company and industry to industry.

Its normally Director, steering the company
Head of dept responsible for a particular area accountable to the director
Lead, normally the senior person leading a project
Senior Manager the person who drives the managers to achieve the aims and objectives of the Leads, Heads of and the Directors

It's usually the case with titles that different firms use the titles differently. Senior manager in a small firm may be a very important policy setter. Senior manager in a multinational may be one of many in a given location with very little say about the firms direction.

It's better to focus on the descripitions of the duties and responsibilities attached to the positions. Good luck!

Titles vary tremndously by company, country and industry- focus on the job description not the title

For me there is no difference.You know Why?
Any job is:
First Hired
then tired
then mired
finally fired
So no matter what position you look at,it still in this criteria.Therefore I am my own boss.
