You can get a tester from Home Depot or Lowe's.

make ice cubes, if the ice comes out with bubbles only in the center its hard water if the bubbles are more uniform throughout the cube its soft water. You could also check faucets for scale the hard white stuff if there is its hard. You can also get test kits from home improvement or hardware stores. To make hard water soft you can get a water softener which you can have installed to your pipes it looks similar to a water filter. Hard water wouldn't make your hands dry.

You can tell if your water is hard if soaps, detergents, and toothpaste doesn't lather up very well. Another way is if you get hard water deposits in your pipes, normally called scale. It looks like concrete. Dryness on your hands is usually do to the pH of your water, not the hardness. Fixing this takes a water treatment system with ion exchange.

I think if you put some in a large bowl, then slap your hand on the top is the best test. If it hurts, then it is almost always hard water.

I had hard water at my house and my hair was always green from using it. Also, it may turn tubs and sinks green. I would suggest getting it filtered.

To test for hard water.......add soap. If it froths up after you swish it about you have soft water, if not, it's hard water.
