To a certain extent that's true. You gain self confidence when YOUR opinion is the most important to you. You should never really STOP caring about what others think, but you shouldn't let their opinions lead you. Listen to what they have to say and take it under advisement. But being your own person is the key to self confidence.

I do think you are onto something. Though not a hundred percent.
To me self confidence is what some people just have. Passion, and a willing to stand up for what one believes does take a certain "who cares what people think". We are social animals who do not like to shunned by others but there is that feeling deep down that just kind of takes over. This feeling does not come from others, but within.
I do feel if one has the goal of getting in front of people such as on a stage, then you would be more on target. Being hungry for that light to be on this person would help if the person did not care what others think, knowing fulling well someone on stage or in front of people has to care what others think or that person would not be in the lime light.
So I do not believe your statement 100 percent but as I said I think you are onto something! Confidence is a big thing and narrowing what one is confident in/about and not caring about others think would be easier to answer, in my opinion.

Only when you believe what they're thinking is all negative and it affects you in a negative way. Sometimes what others think is important because it clues you in to social mores and it gives you better social skills and guidelines for living. However, when all it does is hold you back and make you feel "less than" then, yes, you could gain confidence by not caring at least about what that specific person thinks.

This is true to some extent. You can't let what other people may think enter your mind. FEAR is what keeps most people from success in any aspect in life. If you can ignore all the negative thoughts, you will be more likely to succeed. Success breeds confidence.

I believe that it is overall good for your self esteem, if that is what was stopping you from doing things in the first place, especially things that are in your best interest. However, you won't gain confidence until you start doing those things.

in my opinion, gaining confidence is not about you care what ppl think or not. i guess you have to find out why you are not confident, and what makes you not confident, and how can you improve it. to make this change you have to listen to what ppl think. take the valuable opinion, ignor the invaluables. hope it makes sense to you

not so much "not caring", it's more of not letting it get to you. cause if you don't care, then you just look like an butthead instead of confident. part of confidence is not just about you, but about others around you. you can be confident enough to care what others think, it's insecure when you let it dictate your life or when your aloof to others.

It sure is. I was just under my jeep bleeding the clutch and got dirty dirty and then went out to get if filled with gas and if people don't like me dirty, then they can get out of my way or i'll rub it on them and their "designer" clothes as I pass by. Talk about confident. I am not the least embarrassed.

Sort of. To me, having confidence is knowing if what people think can affect you, and acting accordingly.
