Pumping the blood further around the body? What's that got to do with Physics?!

It has to have more muscle to pump the blood to places further away from the heart such as the head. It would take more muscle to pump blood up 8 feet to a giraffes head then it would to pump it 1 1/2 feet to a humans head. Same with all other body parts, they are all further away from the heart compared to a human.

Janine has the best answer so far, but it isn't just the distance it's the height (or depth actually) that it has to pump the blood. Pressure in a fluid is a function of depth. The higher the blood has to be pumped, the higher the pressure in the vessels is going to be and the stronger the muscle that pushes the blood is going to be.

It has to pump the blood higher, all the way up to the head. It has to work against a higher pressure.
There are a system of valves to regulate pressure when it lowers it's head. Just think how you feel when you quickly put your head down between you knees, and imagine what a rush of blood you would get to your brain if you moved the height of your head 15 feet.

Because it needs a large strong heart in order to pump the blood to its brain. It's long neck is the reason the giraffes heart needs to be large and strong as it is a long distance for the blood to reach the brain..

Look how far it has to pump the blood. That means it has to work harder
