I think you should really research your location. Most large towns etc are overrun with Starbucks etc and the smaller areas without these may not be interested in having a coffee/ cakee shop. Although personally I would prefer a homemade cake and a great cup of coffe in a cosy little shop than some mass produced rubbish in a packed coffee bar. So I would really promote the homemade idea if I were you.
Good luck

You have to,first of all, work out how much it costs you to make a coffee/cake. Then take into account overheads such as rent, power, staff etc. then pitch a price that will tempt customers to buy but not leave you with nothing left e.g. a profit. You have to have something that customers will pay for ( not through the nose). A difficult equation!!!

Word of mouth is always the best advertisement. To me, a clean and simple environment tops on my list. It's the first thing customers see and 'feel' when they first walk into a business establishment. Have your cakes tasting really good. Cut one cake into small piesces, and offer tasting. (The proof of the pudding is in the eating:). A smell of coffee brewing and home baking is a plus. Affordable price, create an aura of friendly, cozy and helpful environment.
