Plants use leaves to absorb sunlight for the process of photosynthesis. In the shade, plants have less sunlight to use, and therefore would benefit from larger leaves, which can absorb more light in a shorter period of time.

Wow it is a while since I did this at school but here goes:
The cells in a plants leaves contaon chlorophyll.
Chlorophyll is the molecule that absorbs sunlight and uses its energy to synthesise carbohydrates from CO2 and water. This process is known as photosynthesis and is the basis for sustaining the life processes of all plants.
If a plant has larger leaves then it has a larger surface area and it can absorb more sunlight. A plant in the shade would benifit from larger leaves as it is not getting as much concentrated sunlight as a plant which is not in the shade.
Chlorophyll is also what makes plants green.

The advantage for plants in the shade to have larger leaves, is because in the shade is cool, the sun don't strike on the plants so for this reason they are growing better and producing larger leaves.

Larger leaves improves the efficiency of the leaf in trapping light energy of the poor relative light supply in the shade area.

they have larger leaves because they need to collect more light than plants in the sunlight.
they need the sunlight for photosynthesis, the process of using sunlight, water and carbon dioxide to make glucose (their food) and oxygen.
i tihnk thats right an dhope tihs helped.
Happy New Year!

It gives them a larger area to photosynthesize, so when they do come into direct sunlight, they can convert the light and CO2 into energy faster than if they had small leaves.

it is an evolutionary adaptation of the leaves to catch the maximum amount of indirect sunlight ( being in the shade) necessary for photosynthesis to manufacture glucose and starch.
