In most states (if not all), a divorce has to be signed off by a judge. Therefore, both parties have to appear in court, even if for 30 minutes, to certify that you are who you say you are and that you are doing this on your own free will.
All paperwork, negotiations, etc. can take place outside of the courthouse with help of a lawyer, the Internet, or a mediator.

Well I am not a lawyer so I can't give legal advice but imo you can file the divorce proceedings pro se (without lawyers). In most states both the Plantiff and Respondent have to show up for the hearing. There are many steps to file for divorce but a lot of the courts now have self help packets available for a fee. Fees for filing for divorce vary from state to state. Some counties even make you both attend a parenting class for divorced parents if children are involved. Once the divorce is final, if children are involved, you may need to modify the original Order from time to time. This can be done by filing a Petition with the Court, or a Motion. In some states you can also go through mediation.
