Silliest think I ever heard. Don't try to fix it if it isn't broke. Quite a few viruses escape Nortons and Mcafee you might get a virus that will do more damage than good when you go around looking for one. I hope the computer didn't cost much for you to go on such a fools quest.

most virus are spread through IE. IE is not a safe browser. you should use a more secure browser to protect your PC from virus.
i recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar. firefox can block any any popup and disable any virus and adware, spyware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE browser. as you know, most of virus spread throught internet and webpage.
besides, firefox is much smaller than IE, so it run faster than IE.

It will alert you when you have a virus. But antivirus software is only as good as the updates.

An easy way is to just use google and search free mp3s and click on any russian site or a site that has .ru instead of .com, alot of russian sites contain viruses

you can get a computer virus from programs that are on your computer, you can also get a computer virus from downloading music or anything that is not protected by copyright.
