Some one very dear and near to me is functionally illiterate. Spell check doesn't really help because he's so far off on his spelling and his grammar is terrible. But I encourage him to post on the Internet thinking that with practise he might be able to at least get his ideas across. We need to be conscious of the fact that some people are challenged with learning disabilities. When I was young my parents were told that I'd never be able to read or write very well....it is an absolute miracle that I can write as well as I do. And I had to work dang hard to get to where I am so this bit about people who can't spell being lazy is a bunch of garbage!

It would take my family member mentioned above HOURS not minutes to type what I have posted here. My family member puts more work and effort into typing one little note then most of you have to put in to a weeks worth of writing.

I had to work ten times harder then any one else I know of to learn how to read and write. So, if you think bad spell and/or grammar means a person is lazy think again.

people criticize others to make up for their shortcomings... it makes them feel better, well, at least until someone else makes fun of them for their inability to do the simplest calculations for example.

I agree with you. And part of learning is to try, even though your attempts are not perfect. It does not help anyone to criticize their efforts. I have no problem with the spelling and grammar on this site, as it is not a formal writing situation and no one should be evaluating other people's efforts here. This is a game really, in many senses, but a game that can also be a learning experience. Anyone who has had any experience working with students with learning disabilities knows that they have to work much harder to be successful. And many people using this site do not speak English well, so this is another opportunity for them to practice. Part of being human is to be able to give others a hand up, instead of a put down.

Share this poem with your family member. It explains some of the reason why English spelling is so tough.

When the English tongue we speak
Why is break not rhymed with freak?
Will you tell me why it’s true
We say sew, but likewise few?
And the maker of a verse,
Cannot rhyme his horse with worse?
Beard is not the same as heard,
Cord is different from word,
Cow is cow, but low is low,
Shoe is never rhymed with foe.
Think of hose and dose and lose,
And think of goose and yet of choose,
Think of comb and tomb and bomb,
Doll and roll and home and some.
And since pay is rhymed with say,
Why not paid with said I pray?
Think of blood and food and good;
Mould is not pronounced like could.
Wherefore done, but gone and lone -
Is there any reason known?
To sum up all, it seems to me
Sounds and letters don’t agree.

Take care.

sadly, the answer to your quesiton lies with society. Looking from your point of view, you are not being lazy and you should be rewarded for still learning/trying. My dad has the same problem...never really wrote and only spoke english so for him to jump to the fucntion of typing emails, it becomes a 1/2 hr process. however, i can also see from the society's point of view why they would look down upon it. when you reach adult age, you're expected to have certain skills down already. for example, you would be expected to stop at a stoplight and not zoom through it. not only do you have to be proficient at recognizing that stoplight but you also has to be in your head early on so you can actually stop it. if everyone was tolerant of poor spelling, then there would be a lot more misunderstanding and so, criticism and setting a social standard only promotes people to study. I do agree however that for certain people, they often judge people that do not achieve social standards too quickly against what is at stake. im just ranting, i agree with you.

i guess we see it so much that it just gets old- and unfortunately for your family member they are getting the brunt end of people getting agitated, alot of people (including myself) probably don't realize that oh this person might actually have a learning disability- so I usually don't say mean things to people but sometimes after reading 15 questions in a row- i get tired of simple words and grammar being misused- and misspelled- but there's not much that can be done about it because unless we can SEE your friend then we don't know that he's truly one of the ones who can't help it- just don't let it get him down that's all, and you do make a valid point! hope you have a lovely day

I have mentioned this before myself. about why people misspell sometimes.theres many reasons.people should try to understand that someone may have had a stroke.or were upset. or lost a loved one that day or were mildly retarded. or had an accident and it hurt there brain. or a number of other reasons why they don't spell a word correctly. I have love in my heart for people. and understand that people are not perfect. I sure am not perfect.I am glad you do well now.I can tell your a fine person. I hope you have great New Year

You spelled a couple of words wrong yourself, those were words easily caught by the spell check button. You are no longer a child, and you shouldn't be too lazy to use spell check while you are ranting at the rest of the world.
Have a good day.

Yes, I realize that there are people with legitimate excuses but more often than not, the person with the terrible grammar IS capable of improving yet doesn't.

I'm only 18 and it pisses me off when my peers speak in slang because some day, we're going to be taking office and running things. I don't want to live in a world run by ignoramuses.

I understand what you mean. It is never right to criticize a person based on something they can't help. See? I didn't know how to spell criticize; I cheated from you :P

Anyway, somepeople like to feel superior in comparison to others, but this feeling is short-lived, as they must continue to put others down.

I guess that they just don't realize that some people aren't as lucky as us. While some people really have problems with spelling, some are just lazy. If you think someone is lazy with spelling, you should tell them, but you shouldn't make fun of someone who has problems spelling.

I know plenty of bad spellers that are a lot smarter than me in many other things. Spelling doesn't measure a person.
