Go to www.crucial.com and enter your computers make a model #. It will tell you the max RAM your machine will allow. Then check your computer properties and see how much RAM you have installed. You can switch out cards and add RAM, up to the max your computer can take.
Check the properties by right clicking My Computer and selecting Properties.

Yes, you can swap out the exisiting chip(s). You don't say exactly which model you have, but a quick check on the HP website will reveal the systems maximum capacity.

Yes, you can replace the existing chips with larger chips, just make sure it's turned off. haha.
Best bet is, if you want to go to 1 gig, replace 2x 256 (which means you have 512 now), with the 1 gig stick, which will let you upgrade later on!

Yes just figure out what kind of ram it is. Just take a stick of ram to the store and ask them if you can get a bigger size of this one or just take your whole laptop to like best buy so they can help you out with it.
