Ring directory enquiries and find out who your "local electricity distributor" is. The "local electricity distributor" will be able to tell what company supplies your new home.

Use the internet to find an electricity company that you'd like to be supplied by. It doesn't make a huge amount of difference which supplier you go for (the variations in price are minimal, but if you want guidance try www.uswitch.com).

When you set up an account with the new supplier, they will ask you for (and explain how to find) the electricity meter number and of course the meter readings.

The new company will inform the old supplier (they will know who that is, as they have access to a national database) and change everything over for you. You don't need to contact the old supplier at all.

I have moved house many times myself and find that the gas and electric suppliers to the house do not usually take long to get in touch if bills are not being paid.

Make sure that you take readings for both on the day you move in so that you can give them these when you do finally contact them, that way you will be paying for the amount of gas and electricity you have used, no more, no less.

There is a number you can phone - Transco can give it you (they should be in yellow pages) They will be able to tell you who your current supplier is. You should give them a meter reading and let them know the date you moved into the new house so you dont get billed for any usage of the previous owner.

When the previous owner sorted all the paperwork out with the solicitor, they should have been given a questionnaire to fill out which details electricity provider, gas suppler, water supplier, council tax band and so on. I would go back to the solicitor as they should have sorted this all out and passed the info on to you.

If you own the house then unfortunatly you are going to have to ring every lecky supplier until you find the company that does supply your service start with the more popular ones first manweb, british gas, npower..........

If you dont own the house your landlord should know who yur supplier is or should find out for you.

You have not said what type of Internet link you have. If is is ADSL (Broadband) you will have to inform your ISP as the new line may not support it for one reason or another (e.g. too far from the exchange). Plus you will need to tell them of your new address so they can bill you.

I would contact the village clerks office or town hall office or ask a neighbor.
