One book I'd recommend is titled simply, American Government, by James Q Wilson. It was an assigned text in a college class I took, and very informative. Another I'd strongly recommend is Democracy in America, by Alexis de Tocqueville. It is an excellent examination of the experiment we call American Representative Republican Democracy.

If you want hard truth that will make you sit in a corner with a bottle of Jack Daniels, buy "The Dialogue in Hell between Machiavelli and Montesquieu" by Maurice Joly. Amazon has a few left, but they're going fast.
