some friends of ours had their baby about a month before we had our little guy.
their son has always seemed healthy and he is about 4-5 months old, now.
they just had to take him to the hospital for a broken arm b/c dad said that he was holding him on the couch and moved him and his arm got caught and broke.
i know babies aren't as fagile as we think they are, but does this sound plausible?? i mean, if my son's arm was caught i'm pretty sure i would realize it before i put enough force upon it to break it.
just curious about any input....
i guess that CPS is now accusing him of child abuse and he claims it was an accident.
thanks.

I have heard that it is harder to break a baby's bones than it is an adults. It is called the green twig effect, a new green twig is very hard to break, but an old dry branch snaps real easy. A baby's bones are very malable, that is why they come out with a cone head that goes away after a few days. I have even read that you can almost bend a baby's arm double before it will break, unless it has a disease like brittle bone or something. That is just what I have been told by my sister in law, she works for childrens services so I assume she is right.

I don't believe it is likely for a baby to break his/her arm or leg by getting caught in the slats of their crib. The risk of SIDS with the bumpers in is worse than the possible but unlikely broken bone that will heal in a few weeks with the bumpers out. Babies are amazingly flexible and a stuck leg or arm will most likely result in crying with frustration before breaking anything. I have been a mom for 27 years and a daycare provider for 20 years and have never heard of a baby breaking an arm or a leg in their crib slats.

It doesn't seem to be an accident to me. I have been told that children have very soft bones, almost like cartilage. This was told to me by a bone specialist. It is VERY hard to break a young childs bones.
About the brittle bone disease, it is hereditary, if any family members have it then the child might too. If the child does have it then I hope the father doesn't get into trouble. If that is the case then it was an accident. It may be years though before they would be able to find out if the child has it.

I'm not sure how fragile in general a baby's bones are as I do not have kids nor am I around kids frequently. However, there is a brittle bone disease that afflicts some children making them very prone to fractures and under the constant microscope of protective services until it can be proved the children have this disease.

A baby's arm is very fragile, poor little guy starting life a little rough. CPS is one of the worst organizations to have chasing down your back. Be careful what you tell them the less the better. Tell him to get into a parenting class now to show that he has the best intrest of the child in mind. Good luck my prayers are with you all.

I know someone who's leg was broken as a baby (around 8 months) just by falling off the couch. So I guess it could happen.

It can definitely happen. My friend had a baby a couple of months ago and when he came out he had broke his arm, so yes it is very common. that's why they tell you not to pull a small child up by his arms.

It is easy to not notice things like that. But their bones are the 1in. thick, so think of how much force it would take to break something like that. Not much. Even though bones are strong.

This doesn't sound like an accident to me, however it's up to you if you want to act on it. A baby is not made of sticks, their bones arnt that easy to break, btw I have three kids so know what I'm on about.

It could happen. I guess I would give him the benefit of doubt. Definatly stay out of it if CPS is involved.
