I have also worked in the industry, and it appears that a lot of people are just clueless

I don't think people understand that jobs like wait staff only get paid about $2 an hour and that tips are their true source of income. It could also be they think the best service wasn't provided to them, although they forget to consider that they are not the only people in the restaurant. True, someone who depends on tips should do their best to keep the customer happy, but some people are never going to be happy. I believe a tip should be required and the percentage should be based upon the quality of service. (Say 15% is standard, if the wait staff is HORRIBLE, they should get less, whereas a good waiter should get 20% or more.)

I think it's just plain ignorance!! I can't imagine going into a restaurant, allowing someone to take care of my every need, eating a meal that someone else has served me and i didn't have to cook, them being friendly no matter how my child is acting or what kind of day the server has had, or what other tables they are waiting on; and not leaving a good tip. And by the way.... 15% was a good tip 10 years ago!!! Now 18% should be the basic starting tip then go from there for better service!!!! Can others imagine waiting 3 tables in about an hour and only getting $3-4 per table....... most servers in big restaurants only work 3-6 hours a day...... add it up. How do they feed their family? They just work longer hours to make ends meet!!!

Tipping is neither a mystery nor a hassle. It is part of using "luxury" services (bars, restaurants, hotels, spas, barbers, delivery etc.). I look at in this way: If I own a car (even a basic model) instead of taking public transportation I have to be conscious that there are other costs that are part of owning the car (gas, tune ups, other maintenance). After all owning a car (for the majority of people) is a product to make their lives easier. The same thing with using services where leaving a tip is part of partaking in this "luxury".

There is no mystery because a tip is part of using services. There is an additional cost to having convience. There is no hassle because a basic tip is 10% of the bill. For exceptional service the amount is 15%-20%.

It shouldn't be either a mystery or a hassle. Tipping is acronym for the following:
To Insure Prompt Service.
True, servers do make their money from tips. Not many servers I know get pay checks no matter how many hours they work on the clock. It is used primarily for taxes. Every server must pay 8% of their sales amount to Uncle Sam. Not on what they receive in tips, but that percentage is of the actual sales they write up. For instance, you have a total bill of $100. That server is automatically paying taxes at 8% based on those sales whether or not you leave a tip, they are paying taxes based on the assumption that you have. Standard gratuity is currently 15-20% with the higher for exemplary service (prompt, efficient, conscientious, friendly).
Please, don't foget to tip your service personnel. They do work for you.

Yeah I definitely notice it's those that have never worked in the industry that tip less. The closest I got was cashier/hostess, but I definitely saw how the wait staff hustled and worked their tail off, and sometimes got a really crappy tip.

Unless the waiter/waitress was downright rude, I always tip at least 15%. Usually 20% or so.

If your a waiter/waitress and working in a restaurant for tips for the first time, its probably a mystery. If your a consumer and never worked for tips, it's a hassle. The general public don't realize the low rate ( in my hometown, its $2.13/hr.) servers make. We depend on the tips for our earnings. I think everyone should have to work in a restaurant @ least once in their lives. Then, maybe people would tip better.
