The movie Abre Los Ojos or Open Your Eyes (Original of Vanilla Sky) is clearly a philosophical movie. What themes does it have in it, and to what areas of philosophy does it apply?
What proof is there from the film?
Should it be shown in a philosophy class?

Also, how does the ending differ in Vanilla Sky? (I haven't seen it)

I have seen both. I saw Vanilla Sky in the theatre when it came out. A lot of people hated it. I loved it. It's bizarre. You get so confused you can't keep track of what's going on until the end when you realize he's been cryogenically frozen (after signing a contract & choosing the lucid dream option) following his suicide & the memories he had since the time of the memory splice (lying on the street) are really just dreams (hence the strange ever-changing events that defy logic. It's dream logic.) They have tampered with his memory so that he won't remember the suicide & unpleasantness, so that he can go back & pretend to live happily ever after with his love. But it goes terribly awry because you can't control dreams, they can take a turn for the worse...

Many years later I saw Abre Los Ojos on TV. I loved it too. It was a little different from the original but pretty similar. I can't remember how either of them ended to be honest with you! They're both on a rooftop & realizing that it's all a dream & that they've been cryogenically frozen in a dream state. It seemed the ideal solution except that the dream turned into a nightmare unexpectedly.

The theme is to open your eyes, literally & figuratively, not to slumber through life but to know what's real. It's philosophical because it examines the nature of reality. How do you know what's real? Even your eyes can fool you. Perhaps you could be suspended in a dream state, having a very convincing dream & your whole life is illusion. In many ways we see what we choose to see. We create our own dreams & nightmares even in waking life. Life can be an illusion (also alluded to with the use of the mask, to hide his face once disfigured.) Dreams can feel more real than reality.

A little like The Matrix, this movie causes you to ask yourself, would you rather face the horrible truth, or live in a pleasant dream? Would you choose reality or fantasy? The blue pill or the red? & how do you know you're not in a dream/fantasy/artificial construct or program now? What is real? How do you open your eyes? What is reality? Is it what we experience with our senses? Even these can be faulty. So what can we trust? Philosophy is based on discovering the nature of reality. Is it concrete or imagined?

That was a good movie I must say. You need to watch it. This guy was trapped in a fake world. He could not distiguish reality from dreams. His sex friend put that message on his alarm clock at the beginning of the movie. Later, he heard the alarm saying it again but this time he was in a dream world. You'll just have to watch it.
