in a culture that values material success above all else, the path of the sociopath (and psychopath) is often the most "productive". by definition, essentially, a (narcissist) sociopath will do and say anything to serve his own ego and purposes. lying is the name of the game. just take a look at our politicians at all levels, local, state, etc. while not all are "used car salesman in training", most are, especially the males. following the path of integrity is the better choice. at a metaphysical level, every thought you think, and every word you utter, carries a specific "frequency". the higher the frequency, the more healing. the lower, the more debilitating. having your mind filled with selfish agendas and methods for manipulating and controlling others produces quite low vibes. is it any wonder that many in our congress look like the portrait of dorian gray, itself? ;-) integrity rules, lying is the path of bloated fools ;-))))

I think good people lie when the truth is worse (or hurts more) than lying. Lying does have its appropriate place and use, but of course can be abused by cowards (as the OP is inferencing).

In the IT field, where hard right and wrong is usually determinable, sometimes one tends to withhold all of the truth to prevent co-workers from feeling bad. That's not exactly lying, but the point is if we were 100% brutally honest all the time, it would just lead to friction. Yeah in an ideal world people can take criticism but not everyone is mature enough for that. Just like you wouldn't tell a 2 year old child that they are ugly (if they really are) until they are mature enough to understand.

I think that liars really only lie to themselves. Lying really just hurts the liar more than anyone else in the long run.

When I was young and immature I used to lie and caused myself so many more problems than if I had just been honest. I even caught myself lying when it wasn't necessary. (Not that it's ever really necessary). But just for really stupid stuff. Eventually, and I can't say if there was a specific turning point, I realized that I could not lie to myself and if I wanted to have any level of self-respect I had to start telling the truth. It didn't mean that I couldn't tell the truth with compassion, I don't think that brutal honesty is necessary in every case. I think that you can be honest yet still tactful and polite, but honesty has gotten me a lot further than lying ever did.

I think that liars are trying to shield themselves from the world in someway or protect themselves or their privacy, but don't realize that lies come back to haunt you eventually. And the consequences are usually much worse than if you had just told the truth right from the beginning.

People lie for such a variety of reasons. Some lie to make themselves feel more important, some to avoid punishment or criticism. Some people are flat-out malicious and lie to harm others. And I agree, some lie because they are cowards who don't want to deal with the fallout that may come from telling the truth. The unfortunate thing about finding out that someone has lied to you is that you can never again believe anything they tell you. That's a big price to pay.

I think that everybody lies, even if just to themselves. I'm glad you've had pleasurable experiences with an honest lifestyle, but I don't think those results would be repeatable for everyone. I have more respect for myself when I'm honest too, but other people have more respect for me when I'm willing to lie to protect their feelings. I've often been told I am too blunt and have learned that honesty and an insult to the intelligence are often synonomous because we have fragile egos and hate to be wrong. While I don't necessarily approve of lying, I recongnize it as a necessary evil of social functioning. I guess tact is the key to balance.

Lies are not good - but just as bad is not telling someone something they should know.

By example, the telephone will ring, it's aunt Patuti, and she'll say, "That was nice of you to send that package, it's wonderful!"

Oh, oh! (I'll think) what package? Then I'll know my wife sent aunt Patuti something and I haven't a clue what it was, (or worse, if there even was a package) this aunt knows my wife, don't ya see!

So I say, "I'm glad you liked it, but someone is at the door, can I call you back?"

Then I hang up - and wait for my wife to get home ....

I hate liars (not the people but that they lie) and I have done it before and I probably will again but I dont like it and i do it far less than most......(i think the last one was like four months ago...or more) I think the truth hurts but far less and you recover quicker
... so stay "Clean" and good luck

For the most part, lying is completely wrong and I don't do it. However, I do use white lies to protect someone's feelings or to make a situation a little easier. You may have more respect for yourself but do others have respect for you when you're so candid all the time?

I cannot abide a liar! I'd rather have the truth any day of the week, even if it hurts my feelings.
