The Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon......synopsis...a nurse from 1942, while vacationing in Scotland get's sent back in time to 1742.

The books (about 5 in the series) are roughly 700 pages each, and are very exciting, romantic, etc. I would have thought they were a "romance" type novel (being a guy), but I read them all and thought they were really terrific!!
