Ref notes on bass you are all wrong the guy asked how many notes, since many positions are both sharp and flat depending on key....your answer would have to include this...the reason for my input is the smart a way johnboy answered a genuine Q from an obvious novice.

Well, let's see, if it has 4 strings, and the neck has 21 frets, that would be 84. If it's a fretless bass,you might need a calculator.

4 strings, 22 frets = 88 notes, plus open strings = 92

always use to be 4 strings. Now you can get them with 5 or six.
