You can start giving him a half of a teaspoon now. If he spits it out it's because he is not ready. When he moves it around it may look as if he is spitting it out but it could be that he is just trying to eat it. Remember this is something knew to him. My son is also 5 months and he loves them.

I believe you can start as soon as 6 1/2 but some would probably tell you at around 7 1/2 I started my son at 6 1/2 on baby foods then I started around 7months with mashed potatoes peas and carrots(etc) but this does not mean that you have to take them off of the bottle that early either

You should start him off with 1st Stage baby food, that is easy to digest and swallow. I wouldn't give him mashed potatoes until about 6 months when he can swallow well and knows how to eat thick food!

my daughter is 5 and 1/2 months old and we started her on cereal first but her first veggie was sweet potatoes, home made (we make ALL her food) just as long as you water them down a little so its easier for him to chew it should be alright. Good luck and happy feeding!!

I would wait another month... but it's safe to give them to him now as long as they are well mashed and don't have salt or dairy... I would suggest mixing them with chicken broth... it makes them really smooth and flavorful but still won't upset the baby's tummy. Good luck!

I didn't give my kids jarred food, I made my own and if you whip up the potatoes really smooth, he can eat them.
