I want to buy a new tower for my bf for his birthday. I am in no way tech. intelligent. The computer at a local store is going for $ 400 it is a AMD Sempron 3000+ with 512 MB DDR400 Memory
Gigabyte NForce Main Board
GeForce 6100 Graphics
80GB 8MB BUffer SATA-II Hard Drive
Dual Layer DVDRW
and Win XP Home

Is this an ok system for him to play good first person shooter games online, and if so is it worth the money they are asking?

If not, do you know where a system is that is good, or what I should be looking for?

I recommend more RAM (this has 512MB and you should have no less then 1GB, 2 GB is recommended). Also, stay away from Celeron style processors. I know this is an AMD and not intel, but AMD has their version of the Celeron (economy processor). If this is one of these, do not get it. It will not be good for gaming. Also, the graphics card is the most important part of the gaming system. that should be a 256MB card or higher. All these recommend upgrades will put the bil much higher then the $400 project price you mentioned though.... It depends on the games and their requirements too...check them out as well.

More memory would be a good thing, at least 1gb, 2 would be better. But it seems like a fine machine. People just want more than they will ever need. Trust me have played games online with a lot less than that machine has. I know you want it to be a surprise but why not ask him. Or get him a gift card.

If you can look around for anotherone with a bit more RAM that will make games go faster (here is what i mean)
"at a local store is going for $ 400 it is a AMD Sempron 3000+ with 512 MB DDR400" where it says 512MB Look for a higher amount for the same price that makes it so games do not lag =] It will work with that but More RAM MEans faster comp. Also go to Best Buy thats my #1 Place for computer help.

You need more RAM. Desperately. At least 1 gig for gaming.

You'd probably want better processor and graphics card in the end also if your going to be gaming.

I suggest getting a faster machine, you'll save money in the end.

Try TigerDirect.com they have much faster for that price.

Mostly for online gaming you want a good screen, a fast processor, and a good video card, I have a Nivdia Gforce and it works perfectly that computer sounds more then halfway decent for gaming.
