They can for usually up to one-year if they were what is red-shirted (did not play) during one year of the eligiability as an undergrad (usually their freshman year. During that year they may practice with the team - but they never play or even suit up for a game.

Seems like it. I think you get four years of eligibility and when some are red shirted or medically held out for a year they may take that time to work on class work and get ahead. I have seen several football and basketball players who were working on Master's degrees while the are playing the sport. Pretty sure you can.

I played NCAA Division II soccer and softball for 4 years in college and to my knowledge they only give you 4 years of eligibility in every sport when you are in undergrad to compete.

As far as Graduate students are concerned I don't believe they would allow them to compete b/c of strict eligibilty requirements.
