Traditional paints use Volatile Organic Compounds which are toxic (this is what causes the fumes). If you are using paint with VOCs, it would be a good idea not to be there until the paint dries.

You can also look for environmentally friendly paints that use zero or low VOCs.

I recently had my house painted with some zero VOC paint from Yolo.

The paint is more expensive, but I was happy to spend the extra dollars to avoid the toxins, and the color turned out nicely.

Sure!!! Paint fumes are not exactly healthy for anyone to be inhaleing too much but you are not at any more risk than anyone else. A lot of women paint the nursery and everything when pregnant and it does no harm. The main paints to be worried about are anything with Lead in it but they don't make that paint anymore. Just make sure that you keep a window open to make sure that you aren't breathing in too much. If you are really conserned about the fumes you can by paint that doesnt have fumes. It is designed for people who can't tolerate the smell. As for it at your paint store..
