I'm German. By my travel experience I can tell you that mainly they are like everybody else. They react to the way they're adressed to.
When you live in a city, you will hardly know your neighbor, when you live in a village, there will be gossip, just like in the south of the US (or everywhere else). People are people.
Germans (in general) are more stiff than Americans and more serious, or let's say they smile less - but when they do they usually mean it. It is not true, that only young people speak English, or do I type chinese? Even my mother was very good in English and she would be 90y by now.
Regionally you can compare a little with the US. The south (Bavaria) is like the south in the States. The north is like the north. Every area has it's benefits, but only the south is known in the US, all beer drinking "Schuhplattler" dancing guys. That is not stading for the entire country.
Why don't you come by and see for yourself? You would be welcome.

In the touristy places, they know where their bread is buttered. That is, they know how to deal with and of course, take advantage of, tourists. Germans are people with all the negatives and positives, but they are a bit more awkward in social settings than Americans, they don't laugh as easily and they don't make friends quite so quickly, but when they do, they mean it and are not so superficial about their relationships. There are jerks in every country, and there are certainly some here. But overall, they really don't drink to excess, they aren't really all that arrogant, they aren't all that stiff and they do have fun. It's just not the same sense of humor as in the states. I was raised here and my family is mostly German and I've lived here since 1992.

I was stationed in Germany when I was in the Army in the 70's.
I traveled to all over Bavaria last June in a motor home we rented in Munich. I have always thought the German people were friendly and helpful. We were the only Americans that we knew of in a large campground near Neuschwanstien Castle. Everyone said hello as they walked by and our neighbors were quick to lend a hand when we were setting up our awning. Just plain old good folks.

I am American and live here as a civillian. I think the Germans are very efficient..things are very by the book. They dont seem to have much of a sense of humor but will "tolerate" foreigners. In the village I live in,I am basically ignored by the older generation..most of the younger generation though are pretty friendly and accepting of my British husband and myself. Germans dont really like confrontation and instead of starting a fight they will just avoid the issue..no one seems to realy get upset..no road rage and no bar brawls here that I have seen so in a sense they seem more "mature" than some of the Brits and Americans to me. In areas where there is tourism nearly all the Germans are friendly enough and speak english but in the off beaten paths like where I live you still will feel like an outcast most of the time..its like typical small town mentality anywhere I guess.

I just returned from my first visit there, and I am definitely going back. You have gotten some good answers here, and I feel most of them apply. The people, I thought, were great. I enjoyed myself!
I was in Berlin on New Years Eve. We were walking on the street in a residential district that had a lot of little bars on the corners. All of the sudden, at midnight, the place came ALIVE with fireworks. I kid you not. I am 49 years old, and I have NEVER seen people have so much fun! I loved It.....
