she retired at 55,also my wife an i are disabled with two teenage kids and my mother in law will come for weeks with her old boy friends and eat us out of house and home,and never offer a penny for food,she is rich,and is so cheap it would make you sick.when shes here and we say we are broke and cant afford food,she says we can all eat hot dogs and doesnt offer a penny.what can we do?

Time to chat with mommy dearest. Lay down the law- when she comes to visit, she needs to help with groceries because when she leaves after eating all the food (even if hot dogs), your children don't have anything else to eat! Those of us who want peace in our families sometimes keep quiet about things that irk us because we don't want to cause any trouble. Isn't it much better to be honest and communicate what we need so that we don't cause trouble later by blowing up for no apparent reason?! Write her a letter, call her, email her- she has to pitch in or you literally can't afford her visit. Best wishes for a happy, healthy family! :)

First thing I would do is lay down the law, no boyfriends stay in the house in the same bedroom...period, you have kids that are impressive to behavior. When she does come, when she says she is coming on a certain date, just say mom can you stop and get some chicken or a few things you and your "friend" like to eat, we have not been to the store lately. She will get the message and move on....hopefully....

LOOK tell you what you do . NEXT time you know she is coming, hide the food. TAKE it to a friends and serve all the things she hates. AND have a pot of beans beans beans.Sneak down to mcdonnalds and buy a 99 cent double cheese burger. THEN go back and tell her your broke. MAKE SURE THE HOUSE IS ALMOST EMPTY WHEN SHE COMES.TELL her your starving to death. DO NOT show her any moneys.

Man you have got it bad! You are going to have to stuck up for your family. Tell she is not welcomed into the home, she has her own home and is literally taking food out of your families mouth and see if that doesn't wake her up a little.
For someone who has her PHD she isn't very smart! She is smart in other ways but not in realizing what she is doing to her daughters family.

don;t give her anything to eat lol, not even a glass of water or tell her that you all are going out and won;t be at home she might leave you guys alone , my grandmother when she was alive her soul may rest in peace use to bring us food, money and gifts ever time she use to stop by she was a great person i love her so much
