i went to the dr today, i'm one week overdue. i'm 1 cm dilated and i was just wondering if anyone knows if theres an avg amount of time it takes before labor starts once you've began dilating. i know every women is different, so it varies, but is there an average time? or how long has it taken in your experience? he said if i dont go into labor by monday, to come back in and we'll talk about inducing then. i've had contractions, some strong, but mostly mild-moderate, and they arent regular really yet.

One week is not that long to be overdue. There is no average time to give for when labor will start after mom starts dilating. Some women can walk around dilated to 1 for a month, I was dilated to 3 for 3 weeks before the baby was born. Dilation is only one piece of the puzzle. You also have to take into consideration if your cervix is soft or hard, how effaced you are (thinning of the cervix), what position your cervix is pointing in, and what station the baby is at (how high or low is his/her head). Your doctor should have told you all of this info when he/she did the internal exam.

Do some research on ways to induce, both naturally (things you can start doing today) and medically if it comes to that. Make sure you learn about and weigh the pro's and con's of each thing you are considering, and if you ar trying any herbs or oils, please check with your provider for the correct dosage and to make sure he/she is OK with you going that route.
