What do you mean it sounds like its slipping? When a transmission slips you can feel it. You may be able to hear the engine revving, but you cant actually hear a slipping tranny. Although it may be slipping, so what I would do is go over to autozone or advance and get a bottle of lucas transmission no-slip. Dont waste your money on any other brand because lucas is the only one thick enough to help a slipping transmission. Once you get it put about half the bottle into the transmission dipstick (you will NEED a funnel) Just remember if it is not shifting to NEVER let the engine go over 3500 rpm when trying to get it to move. If you have to drive it to the mechanics without it shifting, dont drive it over 25-30 mph, you could cause damage to your engine, even blowing it.

First check your tranny fluid. 99% of the time it is that simple. A good transmission will last around 150k miles with proper service.

well first check your fluid.... with you car running in park, check the fluid level. If is is full and you think it is slipping goto a mechanic and have him test drive it, they wont charge you if you ask them to test drive it cuz you think it is slipping. One way to tell is to watch the tachometer and see if the engine revs really high, like over 3000 rpms and you car is moving slow.

check the fluid level and look at the color and smell it if it is at the correct level(you probably need to check it when the car is warmed up the stick will likely say "full hot") the color should be red not brown and if it has a burnt smell that is bad.
if it smells bad or looks brown have it changed.
a fluid change probably will not be over $100.00

Transmission slippage can be relate to low fluid, clogged filters, or OLD tranny. Take to an AMMCO or tranny shop in your area they might be able to work it over and save it or you may need to have them put in a rebuilt tranny.

Get it looked at and about $2000.
I don't know you don't say what make, model, and year the car is.

What kind of sound? If it is a squeal, then it is your fan belt not your transmission.
