Differnet things to differnet people. There's individuals heros (maybe a parent, a mentor, an idol whome they strive to be like, someone they admire) and there's societies heros (a most fickle title if ever there was one.)
The first is purely something we each decide for ourselves. Sometimes we don't decide it, it justhappens that we realize one day someone is our hero.
In society, it depends on the society, a groups place in society, their values, and much more. To some people musicians are heros, to some it firefighters and police officers (like myself). There are those in history for whom Adolph Hitler was a hero, and other might look up to and admire someone like Paris Hilton.
Hero's are not usually consciously choosen by individuals or society. They just sort of BECOME, for good or ill.

A hero couuld be a superhero, like Superman or Batman.
But a different kind of hero is someone you look up to or someone important who had and impact on your life.

Someone who is willing to die for their belief. Also they have strong convictions. Whatever it may be. Example Martin Luther King Jr., Ghandi, etc.
EX. Kenshin, Goku, Batman, etc.
