I'm feeling really depressed lately. I'm an artsy person so I took a creative program in a college (Canada) for 3 years. Now I'm in my second semester of University majoring in something else and I'm really depressed. All my friends will be done after this semester and I still have 2 more years. I just feel so behind now.... I know most are going to College after University anyway, but I just feel like maybe I should'nt have done things backward. I also did extremely poorly first semester (weird transition from College to University) and am finding it hard to think I can recover from my first semester. I did very well in College and got many transfer credits. Is it normal to feel this way? I'm really depressed and don't know if I should talk to someone at school or not? Can anyone relate? Is it possible to recover from a bad semester (first one) in University?

I hope this helps...

I can relate to your situation. It took me 5yrs to finish college here in the states and it only took most of my other friends 4. And of those friends who graduated with me most of them have double majors and are certified accountants and that's why it took them an extra year.

When it came time for my other friends to graduate I felt like a failure and I so much wanted to graduate with them. I was depressed by the situation as well. It is completely normal to feel this way. But I slowly began to realize that I should have been proud of myself b/c I was sticking it out and still striving for my goals. So many other people who start college don't finish and here I am approching my last year feeling sorry for myself.

You should be proud that you have what it takes to stick with it and do things at your own pace instead of society telling how you should persue your education. Cheer up! It will all be over before you know it, trust me!!

Bad grades your first semester?? That was me too. You'll do better next semester. Your just getting used to a new environment. Just push yourself and I promise success will come.

Good Luck!!!

My son had exactly the same feelings of not doing well enough and being "behind" others. Look around you very carefully at school - some of those students are, I'm sure, much older than you - there is no such thing as "behind". Everyone has a bad term here and there - most who say they don't are likely lying about their grades (a very common occurence at university and college). My son, by the way, hung in there, got his degree and and a diploma and is now working for the government and doing just fine! Just make sure you are doing something you love!

Sure it is! Keep your chin up! At least your able to attend, some people cant even get into college/university! It took me so long to get my degree - I would get so down, but when I had it in my hand I cant tell you how much it was worth! If your feeling that down though, talk to your counselor at school, sometimes it may help. For me, I had to work it out on my own. My counselor just made me more depressed by telling me how much more I had to do to get my degree... Good luck to you!!
