Canada, Sweden, Denmark and a number of other countries are way out on front of the U.S. on all the counts you mentioned. It's not a pipe-dream. It's do-able.
America has to take it's eyes off the almighty dollar and start taking some responsibility for all it's citizens. You'd think from listening to Americans, Republicans in particular, that the bottom line around every social issue is, "Will they raise my taxes?".
Clearly the traditional American approaches aren't working. The U.S. is becoming a third-world society... with the haves in continual and escalating conflict with the have-nots. American prisons are over-flowing, the middle-class is shrinking and the social divides have never been deeper.
America needs to start investing in its people. America needs to start seeing itself as an interdependent community, and they need to start putting the good of the many over the good of the few.
Before it's too late. And the clock is running.

We can't obviously as nice as the thought is it seems to be left to our government to decide (again full of corruption)... I mean after all we don't even have the choice if we wear seat belts or not anymore. Somewhere between the generation before us and now we have lost all say so... and until we the people reunite, grow some balls and take a stand I think life just has it in for us. I think the amish have great ideas... seriously they all work together to build each others homes and take care of one another everyone pulls their weight...no college education required to make it there, but I do have my own beliefs when it comes to God. Society is the problem

Your goals are admirable...and really, should be shared by all. Sadly, however, most people are too caught up in their own lives, and blaming others for their problems to worry about the lives of others. We have, somehow, gotten our priorities so far out of line that we have begun to believe the theory that it is 'everyman for himself'. An issue as large and all encompassing as Global Warming comes along...and instead of concerning ourselves with the causes and possible resolutions...it is easier to toss it aside and label it as a political agenda. With this kind of thinking, I'm afraid that we will never see a return to good morals and standards of living.

I afraid it's the world we live in, children will see what their fathers/mothers do or their friends etc etc.. Or how they are raised and repeat it unto their children...
It's all about greed, power, envy, etc..
And everyone has different views on what's wrong and what's right, everyone will have opinions trying to silence the other or conquer them.
It's also partly nature, our nature is to take care of our selves, and to destroy the weak. Hence people tease to put down others, would rather take others lives instead of their own.
You can not wish for peace in this world or avoid all the terror in this world, you just have to learn how to get through it all, that is what our parents and teachers (hopefully) are trying to teach us...

Thought provoking question, although I don't necessarily agree line for line.
Generally, people think about themselves and not others, and today rather than tomorrow. Many prefer money (however obtained, legally or not) to the satisfaction one can derive from helping others.

Put down the bong and get a real job.
If you want freedom, you must also accept that others will simply live their lives the way they wish as well - even if it's not what you think they should do.
I'd like to live where the government doesn't steal a large portion of my money and give it to people who choose not to work. When you add it all up, federal, state, local, sales tax, social security tax (both paid by you and your employer), unemployment tax, etc., you don't even get to spend half of what you earn on actual goods.
