Check your display settings. Right click on the desktop, go to properties, and make sure the resolution is set right, otherwise, you would have a screen woth a black broder around it, possibly. I have no idea if this answers your questions.
Also try to maximize your windows.

In the long run widescreen will be better. Most Movies are all ready widescreen, and TVshows & video games are beginning to convert as well (FINALLY!)
