I have fixtures that don't accept flourescent bulbs. I also do NOT like reading or working to fluorescent light. It's got an odd quality to it that bothers me.
There ARE incandescent bulbs with longer life, and I do use those where I like incandescent lighting.
Unfortunately my house has a lot of chandeliers with those candle-flame looking bulbs, and a lot of recessed lighting (hate it). Haven't found either of those in fluorescent.

most of my home is on fluorescent bulbs with the exception of the front porch light. It's exposed to the weather and the humidity destroys the circuit. In rainy weather I can go through a bulb every three days and that gets expensive. It isn't feasible to protect it from the weather.
There is still a market for incandescent and other bulb types because some people exercise their freedom of choice to by them instead of fluorescent bulbs. Frankly, compact fluorescent bulbs are not cheaper to operate because they don't last all that long, not enough to cover their original cost in energy savings.

If you are just starting off moving towards a more "green" lifestyle, there are so many little changes that you can make that can really add up and will not really inconvenience you too bad while you are kind of "transitioning". Switch to cloth napkins. They don't need to be discarded (and most napkins are usually not recyclable), they are "classy" and nice to use, and you can pretty much throw them into the laundry with an already full load and not make a difference. Save money and create less waste! Bike whenever you can! Short trips can easily be accomplished by biking around/walking instead of hopping in the car! I actually have been selling all my cars as I bought a new trike and ride my mountain bike everywhere, practically. When driving, consolidate trips to reduce fuel usage, keep tires inflated, and your car in tune. These will all save fuel. Avoid buying packages that have individual servings prepackaged. These use a lot more packaging material. Bulk packaging really minimizes on waste. Cleaner greener cleaning products/detergents such as from Seventh Generation are easier on the environment (and not extraordinarily hard on your pocketbook). These are at least a few easier steps on your way to building green and moving in that direction! I applaud your effort!

(Why is this a law question?)
Because incandescent bulbs are much cheaper, and many people can tell a difference between incandescent and (lesser quality) compact fluorescents. Further, there are some fixtures in which the compact fluorescent won't fit.

Because i can't affort the incandescent bulbs. You might say that it would be worth the money in the long run because they would last longer. However, when you live paycheck to paycheck with mere pennies to spare each month, you don't even have enough extra money to invest in a light bulb. Sad but true. Understand now?

some types of bulbs don't come in "compact florescent". i recently bought a refridgerator bulb and had to use an incandescent bulb because i couldn't find one in florescent. until they make all types of bulbs in florescent consumers don't have a choice but to buy what is provided for them.

Because the people who own the corporations that manufacture these bulbs, want to stay in business. They just try to find ways to make it better.
Its all about the money for them, not the consumer.

The new light-bulbs have a really ugly light to them. I prefer the more natural light of the oldies (but "long-lasting").
