Usually death....if they weren't a legend in real life they probably get that title in death. Unfortunately, every product will go up in price after one dies. Artists, race car drivers, Singers, actors, some people never know about the person til he dies. I guess it's like a lot of people, you're worth more dead then alive. And that's a shame.

legends are based on a truth at one point. Such as the legend of the Loch Ness monster. Someone saw something and it was no mistake but as time went on the legend grew into a fairytale and the monster was now like a prehistoric beast and it ate people. It's just like the game telephone where you have a long line of people and you whisper one thing in the person's ear at the end of the chain and as it goes through the line the message is distorted.
You can think of this as well, Robin hood was a real peron in history yet fiction makes him out to be the Greatest man of all time, Robbing the rich and giving to the poor. But he really robbed the rich and gave small amounts to the poor and kept much of the money himself. He was a theif by birth and his heart never left it. yet his legend is he was the saint to the poor when really he was a pest to the rich ans he scammed the poor.
Legends are stories that are passed from generation to generation adding and subtracting from the story and keeping the main focus but also getting in juicy details to pull people in. That's Why i'm a Mythology major with a minor in gaelic and latin. I also finished my degree of Geography and greek mythology and after i finish with Latin i'm working on greek. Happy Hunting!

stories which have been handed down for a long period of time. the best example I can think of is when a group of people sit in a circle and the 1st person tells a sentence to the next person, etc. by the time the sentence reaches the last person the sentence is totally different.
