First off, make them aware of the tactics people try to use to lure them in. For instance, a kidnapper may say, "I need help finding my lost dog," or an abuser may threaten to harm the childs family if they tell anyone. Make children aware that these tactics are just that- tactics.

It's important for them to have someone they can trust and can name now that they say they will go to if they are ever abused or placed in any uncomfortable situation.

It's not the child's responsibility to protect him/herself, it's the parents' job. The way this question's been worded suggests that it's the child's own fault if he/she is abused, which is NEVER the case.

They can't be expected to protect themselves.
That's the adults' job.
If kids are being abused there are 2 offenders: the abuser and the person whose legal duty it is to protect the child.
