a 23 degree tilt perpandicular to the plane of the sun and planets

The axis of the earth is made up of the Gravitational pull from the sun and the other planets in our solar system. The gravitational pull from the sun has perfectly aligned all the planets in our solar system and they all rotate around the sun. This rotation around the sun causes our planet (Earth) to rotate, the center point at witch the earth rotates is called the axis, it is tilted 23 degrees. Picture the axis an imaginary pole that has been driven through the center of the earth and the earth spins or rotates on this imaginary pole. I hope this helps.

There is a giant candy "pole" which goes through the center of the Earth. Santa Claus had it built there by his elves 4,000 years ago, and had it tilted 23 degrees so that the Earth would have a tilt, thereby creating Summer and Winter.

He did this so there would be a Winter, and hence, a time when he could travel the Earth handing out presents to good boys and girls.

The earth's axis is defined by its rotation. Hold a basketball using one finger from each hand, then turn the ball. Your fingers are the point of support, and so the ball rotates around them. The earth rotates in space. It needs no points of support. But the rotation still defines the axis. Good luck with your powerpoint.

Well i´m not sure I got your question right, you mean what the axis is actually made of? In that case, really, nothing, it is just an immaginary inclined axis arround which the earth spins. But if you mean what effect does it´s inclination have on our environment, then it´s another story: It´s due to it´s inclination that we have four different seasons of the year. Regards, Gabriel.
