Wow, an important and timely question for a country (USA) that is stuck in adolescence (I offer as exhibit A, the culture of being cool).

Yes, there are many requirements. Here ten of the main requirements for adulthood:

1. Learn to be empathetic and to truly see ideas and situations from other people's perspectives.

2. Act with integrity so that your words have meaning and your actions align with your words.

3. Take responsibility for your own crap knowing that you can change yourself even if you cannot change others.

4. Accept that the Sun does not rise when you open your eyes in the morning and set when you close your eyes at night. The world exists for much larger reasons than to serve you.

5. Learn to care about others, even strangers because we are all interconnected and what happens to he least of us happens to all of us.

6. Clean up more messes than you make.

7. Learn to create a romantic love that is not merely rooted in lust but in the more timeless values to mutual understanding, shared goals, reliability, mutual support etc.. (we all get ugly eventually).

8. Stand up for what's important, even if you stand to lose something.

9. Be a light in the world, that is be a good role model for others in your universe - practice kindness, demonstrate love, show respect....

10. Worry less about what others think about you and more about whether you are the person you intend to be.

Adulthood is more of a proces than a destination - good luck!

I think being an adult requires only one thing really - the ability to take care of your own reasonable needs. If you can't survive without someone making sandwiches for you, and you don't have some drastic medical problem, then you are a child.

Interestingly enough, the law tends to agree with me on this one. There is a mechanism to achieve legal adulthood in spite of a low age, and that is to become an emancipated minor. Most places have slightly different requirements for what it takes to be granted this status, but for almost all of them they include living on your own, being able to maintain good health in yourself, and being able to support yourself financially.

If being an adult required a lot more than this, then we would be talking about something else entirely. A lot of people seem to be defining the word 'paragon', 'saint', or 'good person' instead of adult.

Yep, Jeff has it right, especially the answer about caring for others. A lot of old people are really not adults because they think only of themselves.

1 - a sense of empathy and pain; so that you realize what your words and actions do to others.

2 - a big sense of responsibility. One must be able to consistently report for work, take care of various obligations on an ongoing basis.

3 - a sense of compromise and forgiveness. More marriages fall apart from a lack of compromise and an overabundance of selfishness than any other reason.

4 - a sense of contribution for the benefit of society. Just be willing to do something to help somebody else out without being recognized or rewarded for it.

That should do for starters........

You have to pass a secret ritual right after puberty. We don't tell children about it to avoid scaring them, but you will be visited in the middle of the night by initiated "adults" dressed in black, who will take you to the proving grounds, most likely an abandoned warehouse or clearing in a forest preserve near your home... there you will be given three tests of courage, strength and intelligence.

If you pass the ritual, you become an adult. If not, a magical spell is cast on you that age regresses you back to a newborn, you're given to new parents (newly initiated adults), and you have to try it all over again.

being responsible, your not a kid anymore you can't skip school and go hang with your friends i think being an adult is much more harder then in a16 year old will look at it because when your 16 you think about being indepentent and being own your but you find out bills come pileing in and you have work work work and its not all about fun maybe once every other week you go out to a bar for a drink and then think oh wow i gotta get home and get to bed. So if you think its better being aldult it really isn't

Maybe you should rephrase your question, to be an adult is to be fully grown or developed. Many of the things Jeff said are not attained by many people I'd refer to as 'adults'.

Any of the following (in no particular order)

1. Intelligence, or at least a desire to educate yourself on your own time, outside of a school setting.
2. An urge to improve yourself through discipline and determination to be a better person.
3. Taking on responsibilities for yourself, even if you don't necessarily have to.
4. The ability and willingness to support yourself financially, emotionally and mentally.
5. Care and compassion for the needs and circumstances of others around you rather than simply looking out for yourself.

Since you state that you are not talking about age, Being an adult requires you to have enough experience to conduct yourself self-sufficiently in a appropriate manner, where you can make wise decisions.
