Not a single democrat was ousted from office, and in order for them to have taken over both houses, they had to also beat out incumbent republicans. What do you believe was the deciding factor (if there is one) which made people overwhelmingly vote for democrats in this most recent election?

Actually, they didn't "overwhelmingly win" by a landslide as you seem to infer. They narrowly beat just enough incumbents to seize control. I would say that it was solid politicking from their strategists and a general malaise throughout the country for politicians causing a "throw the bums out" attitude. If more Dem incumbents in the Senate had been up for re-election in moderate areas, I bet some of them would have taken a fall too.

Ultimately, the one deciding factor has to be the failure of the Republican Congress to accomplish any real change though. They failed on almost all goals by not forcing their strong points: immigration, foreign policy, tax cuts, economic reforms, pork-barrel spending, etc. The Republicans did have the majority and subsequently the responsibility for any lack of progress.

Now the onus will be on the Dems to address the complaints of the nation. If they fail to do so, they won't last long either...

I think what determined the outcome of the election was that the Republican party's poor performance so far. The previous administration had returned this country to fiscal strength by totally eliminating the national deficit leaving us with a surplus. Now the country has a deficit in the Billions of dollars. That plus all the lies that were used to get us into this stupid war. Where are the WMD? What happened to Osama Bin Laden? Think people have had enough!

The number one reason was the Iraq War. The majority of the American people are frustrated with Bush's lack of competence and unwillingness to change the course, instead of staying a failing course, in Iraq. The scandals that rocked the Republican Party in the last year didn't help them either.

I think it was to balance power. George Bush was busy taking our freedoms away. We want it to stop.
I don't think it was because the democrats are considered smart or anything other than a bunch of whimps. I don't agree with the current Republicans but one thing for sure, they are not wimps.

The republicans did not accomplish anything. Why send them back to do nothing?
