You can put plain water, or add a little ammonia to it. The fluid that goes there helps to clean the windshield, better than plain water. Big C tip -- Wax your windows and you can see the results. Then you might be able to get away with plain water.

You can just put in water, and it will be just like using your wipers in the rain. HOWEVER, if you live in a cold climate where it gets below freezing, then plain water will freeze and damage your system, so in that case you need something that will not freeze during those times of the year, like store bought, or alcohal mixtures.

In summertime, water with a little dish washing liquid works great. But in winter you want to use the purchased washer fluid to keep the liquid from freezing!

Windshield Wiper Fluid, either diluted (50/50) or straight in, will clean the windshield as it is sprayed on, and the wipers spread it across your windshield, improving visibility.

Also you can use water, but its not as effective.

Also you can use an Anti-fog solution, such as Rain-X, which will also help visibility in rainy and foggy driving conditions.

Well, if you live where the temperature goes below freezing, water would be a bad idea. I suggest the blue stuff that you can buy at about any store.

Yes, the regular blue covered washer fluid is all you need to put in there.

Depends on where you live. Straight water will smear your windows. Use the "Blue" stuff, but get something marked at least -20ºF. Even if it does not get cold where you live, the cold stuff has more methanol and will clean your bugs better.
