I am taking my kids to Disney World and I will have to pull my 5 year old out of school.

My parents and my Mother in Law are not very happy about this, but it is the only way I can afford to do everything that we want to do.

Should I get his homework and ask his teacher to make up a schedule so he can keep up or just forget about it and let him deal with it when we get back?

He went to a very good pre-school, and is way ahead of the other kids in his class, so I am not really worried about him missing out on anything critical.

He's five. How important are the individual lessons when you're five? Not at all important. He sounds like a smart kid. He'll probably learn more at Disney World than at school. Forget about school for a few days.

In my local school board there is a leave of absence form for parents, teachers and children to sign in cases like this. I did it a few times as a student when going on vacations, even in kindergarten.
What happens is the parent gives the dates to the school, the teachers then supply a list of work to be done over the holiday. Then the parents and student(s) have a conference with the teacher to make sure everything is understood by everyone and everyone then signs the form.
Really, it's just to make sure that nothing crucial is missed, and in most cases the teacher will just instruct the parents to read when possible with their child, or not leave any work for the child to do. Its just usually best to check with the teacher in the situation. Especially in kindergarten -at that age they are learning more at home than they are in class anyway; and vacations can also be very educational and beneficial to a child's learning.

I would defiantly ask the teacher for a schedule of work that will be done in the absence and work something out with the school. First off, it is only the 1st grade and if your child is ‘on task’ and received a great head start, then she/he should have no problems when she/he returns. Secondly, it is not like you are going a way for a whole month, are you?

I am sure you respect your parents and in-laws, but you are the one who have to rinse your children. You can seek their advice, but you don’t have to follow it if it is not what you feel that should be done. Entertainment these days can hurt the pockets deep! If you have a chance to save money and have a good time, go for it.

At this age, it doesn't really matter. I would say just let him get the work when he returns. Disney World has the opportunity to be very educational. Epcot can teach about different cultures and technology. Animal Kingdom teaches about, of course, animals. There are even extra tours you can attend that will be very educational and beneficial. I am fully ok with pulling kids out of school for personal reasons, provided they are not breaking attendance policy, they have good grades, and complete any make up work assigned. Seeing as he is ahead of his peers and only 5, I see no reason not to pull him out of school for a few days.

Have fun!

At five years old, the work missed is probably not as critical as it might be when he is older. It does however send a message to your son that school is not as important as vacation. If it does not happen frequently as he gets older I would say there would be no harm done. Do not ask teachers for assignments because it will not get done while kids are on vacation and it is an inconvenience for teachers to prepare a packet of work for nothing. Do not expect your son to do school work while on vacation, that is unrealistic. I am encouraged that you are concerned about the situation at all. I would say go, but do not make a habit of pulling him out of school. Try to schedule vacations when school is not in session.

My kids missed the first three days of school this year because it overlapped with our Disney vacation. I say go for it. Those are days the kid will remember for the rest of his/her life. In the grand scheme of things, my kids missed very little work, but they gained a lot of great memories. I had the teachers give us stuff for them to do on the trip down and back (we drove). But anything that didn't get done, I had them deal with when they got home. Don't worry about it much. Just have fun!

He's just five years old. He probably wouldn't really miss much of anything... so, if u want, you could have him get his school work from school before you leave, but he should have an easy time finishing up the homework that he didn't do... and maybe just give the teacher a heads up that he won't be there. Because once your child gets into the higher grades, he probably won't have the time to go to places as often anymore.

If this is a once in a lifetime trip, you should absolutely take them out of school. Make sure to ask the teacher for his assignments. This would be a good thing to do in the airplane/train/car.

The absence may be excused if you plan on visiting places like Epcot or the African Safari experience. Speak to your principal or headmaster.

I have to remind my mother that I am the parent of my child and that may not be a bad idea for you to do also.

Best wishes and have a great trip.

Why are you letting guilt get to you? Do you think your children learn more from their teachers or their parents? You would hope the answer would be both. Giving your kids a break to take them on vacation is a good lesson to learn. That is, to not overburden yourself, but to make sure you are responsible when you learn to live life.

For example, inform the teachers what you are doing, so you can get the work and do it at night or before you go back to school. We don't want to teach our kids to have such a tough work ethic that they can't enjoy life either.

No i does not. those 3-5 days off from college would be unexcused, so the youngsters does not be waiting to make up the artwork. In those days there's a huge homework task or attempt that would make the adaptation between passing and failing. a baby's training trumps holiday. EDIT on your edit. If it is going to be in the 1st 2 weeks then i'd see little injury. yet after the 1st month of faculty I nonetheless does not. on account it quite is whilst they start up coaching the "new" stuff no longer the overview. And it takes little time to fall at the back of because of the fact they pass so immediately in the process the academic technique of the 12 months.
