This sounds more like adware than a virus. If this is the case, downloading AdAware or SpyBot Search & Destroy (SD) and scanning your computer might find and allow you to resolve the problem.

It also may be that you have a program that is checking for updates. This can be legitimate but it should also be possible to make in less obtrusive or convert it to a manual check. SpyBot SD has a startup list in its tools section and there are a number of freeware programs that can list anything that your system is automatically starting. I like WinPatrol.

But from the way you've described it, you might have Internet Explorer in your startup folder and you have your homepage set to something other than blank. Each time your computer starts up it starts IE. Each time IE starts it tries to access the homepage and produces the error message.

If you aren't connected to the internet and you get this message, then either some program that you are using (or more likely one that is running in the background) is trying to access the internet).

It might be something harmless, like a program trying to update itself, or download data. But it might be a virus, or some other malicious program using your machine as a zombie terminal. Either way you probably have extra stuff running and taking up resources.

First look down next to the clock on the toolbar--there are probably programs running unnecesarily, you can kill or disable them there, but they will come back the next time you boot. Delete everything from the 'startup' folder under the start menu. Then press CTRL+ALT+DEL to bring up the task manager--switch to processes, and make a list of everything that is running. Go online and search for each item, and find out what it is is, and how to remove it (or leave it alone if it is necessary for Windows to run). Make sure to back up all of your important files before messing with it.

If you are feeling brave you can clean out garbage from your windows registry--there are some freeware programs (and some that are not so free) for helping you with it, but as long as you back up your stuff (if you are using Windows XP - make a restore point) you can fiddle around to your hearts content.

It sounds like Internet Explorer is set to connect on demand. To check this, click tools, internet options, click the connections tab, look for the option that says dial whenever a network connection is not present. If that is selected, choose a different option. This should resolve the issue.

That is normal thing windows does. Just go in to start/control panel/ internet connections/ go to the wireless connection and disable it (usually it is right click and then disable). As for the virus thing people are saying. It would not hurt to get a anti virus program but that is probably not what's making your computer do this. Also if you do not use dial up you may want to disable that to.

You have a virus on there. I had this problem, if you go to www.download.com which gives free downloads for all sort of software, including anti virus. Download more than one, as viruses, trojans and worms sometimes hide themselves against certain anti-spy programmes.

We have xoftspy se along with spyware doctor and spybot, they're all really good programmes and between them do a damn good job. Norton is not as good, as all the malware programmers write files to get past that. I once had a virus in Norton, that it took another program to pick up as Norton thought it was its own file!

You'll also need a registry cleaner, as the malware gets in there and masks itself as other things, plus cleaning your registry cleans out your old data and makes your system run better. The pc doesn't have to 'trip' over dead links, bits of dead programmes etc to run. I'd recommend registry mechanic or regcure.

The reason why I know you have spyware is simple. I come from an IT software background and know that these types of malware collect info from your pc, then update their creator with it by connecting to the net. The problem is when you have the net constantly connected, then you don't even notice half the time that they are doin it.

Once you have installed, ran and gotten rid of the 'bug', run a system defrag and your pc will be nice and healthy then!!

i presume you are on dial up,as this is a common problem in this type of intrenet connection
go to control panel>internet options>connections>make sure the box is ticked with "never dail a connection">then press apply
however sometimes this happens when a program is trying to connect to the internet,so you need to find if there is a program, such as is this happening when you use a certain program or does this happen when you first boot up
also check the dial up and network settings box on the connections tab in internet options,if there is any old dial up isp,s in there ,remove them as they may be trying to connect you to the internet even when you no longer use them
there could be numerous reasons for this, you just need to pinpoint the time it dows this and diagnose the reason,as i cant see your p.c its a immpossible task to try to explain
you could try a optimizing program that finds and deletes invalid programs ect..advanced windowscare personal(http://iobit.com/)is a great peice of software that will scan for any invalid registry entries and any errors within windows, give this a go,this may be able to fix this problem
good luck mate

It seems like some program is trying to connect without your knowledge. Open the task manager (CTRL+ALT+DEL) and close any unnecessary programs (the ones you think are unnecessary). Dont worry about making mistakes, Windows will not let you close the critical programs. See if this works. Also, a virus or a trojan could be the culprit. Update your antivirus and scan for any viruses. If all else fails, you can always reinstall your OS.

I'm guessing you have a router,This happends to me when i lose connection, you are not losing connection its just that if you become idle looking at a web page the Internet connections shows a low connection feed.
look at your connection feed,i run another PC also through a router and connection feed drops to 68 %.
check connection feeds options and this will stop.
good luck
