Why do conservatives persist in misquoting Al Gore?

Regarding his purported boast that he "invented" the Internet, read:

Kinda like saying Ronald Reagan invented ketchup...........?

Because mis-quoting Gore gives them a warm fuzzy feeling, whereas quoting Bush does not.
