Recently my computer is acting all sorts of weird. It started with my computer not saving my clock settings, then progressed to Windows Explorer not booting up when the computer did, then Windows XP would get stuck in a loading loop...and now my computer wont stay in sleep mode.

Is it time for a windows Reinstall, or just a new CMOS battery?

Run your anti-virus program. I recommend that you go to http://www.download.com and get AD-AWARE and SpyBot Search & Destory. Install, run, update and scan your computer with both programs.

Good luck and Happy Computing!

1. Turn the computer on and press the F8 key every two seconds until you get a boot menu. Choose Safe Mode.

2. Navigate around the environment and see if Windows Explorer gives you the same problems.

3. If you do not have the same problems than there is something loading at Startup that is giving you issues. Try launching MSCONFIG.exe

4. If you have a separate user account test the functionality of the computer under a different user account. If the problems go away than you have a corrupt user profile.

5. Check the time in the BIOS and see if it is resetting, if yes than change the CMOS Battery. Typically a CR-2032.

Do you have some sort of a virus protection software on your computer? If not then you might have caught a virus... but you probably already know this. I had a problem with starting internet explorer and discovered that it was all those darn add-ons, so I removed them and it works fine now. If I were you I would download a virus protection software (Norton is excellent) and run a virus check on your computer. If it catches one it will quarantine it. If you have already done this then try going through all of your files and delete all of the things you don't need. You should probably do a disc cleanup... first you click on Start then programs, then accessories, system tools.... and a whole array of stuff you can do to repair your computer will pop up- it does take a while for your computer to do a disc cleanup but it is well worth it. If all else fails try going to Microsoft.com and see if they have any patches for the problems you have been having... the patches should fix it. And if it still doesn't work then uninstall Microsoft and re-install it. Of course you will lose all of your information... but it should work.

Reinstalling Windows is a sure way to correct most of those problems. Get a new CMOS battery for the clock settings not being saved.

If you don't want to reinstall, here are some things that you can try:

Make sure that your virus definitions are up to date. You do have virus protection, right? Scan for viruses, adware, and spyware.

Get your registry cleaned up.

If possible, do an XP system restore to a earlier date.

If you haven't tried already I would try to restore my computer back to an earlier date. I did it when my computer started acting up and it worked like a champ. Just click on your start button then click settings, then control panel, and choose help and support then look for restoring your computer, click on that and it will step you through how to do it. My computer got really slow and errors kept popping up so I restored mine back to an earlier date when I knew it was working the way it was supposed to. It should fix the problem if not then try your CMOS battery. Good luck!

I would try a reinstall, or if you have a newer computer, try your System Restore program to restore some files from an earlier date. You will want a VirusScan program on your computer too, because that sounds like either a virus problem or Windows corruption problem

If the system clock keeps resetting it probably is a CMOS battery. The windows problems don't sound like they are related--probably time to reload, or do some serious cleanup, possibly a virus.

First do a full virus and spyware scan to make sure you don't have any of those creatures in your system.

Then do a re install.
