I know it's a dumb question, but it's even dumber to assume without truly knowing.

In short, yes. The codecs are for any player. They are associated with the media type when installed. Be careful though, to many codecs can cause problems. Some don't get along well with others. It's best to identify the needed codec and just install it.
Download GSPot. It's a free ware application for identifying codecs and it'll even tell you if you have the one you need. Just drag and drop the video into GSpot.
Also check out free-codecs.com for all you need including better media players than M$'s.
VideoLAN is one of the best and it's free. It also comes with it's own codecs, uses far less resources than WMP and plays vids that would crash WMP. All of these and more can be found at free-codecs.com
More resources? Try afterdawn.com and doom9.org for all your video needs. FAQs, tutorials and free user forums for in-depth help from video gurus.

Right click on the video file then click on properties. On general tab choose change at the top and choose the program you want to play files with. If it's not list then click on Brows and find it where you have installed it. At the end check the ALWAYS USE THE SELECTED PROGRAM ... and click on OK.
