Just take up The Beatles, everything started with them. Metallica is simple, but it's also stupid, you cannot learn anything musically valid from that junk, or from Nirvana, for that matter (Cobain's qualities were anywhere but in guitar playing, he was worthless with guitar). Pink Floyd songs are very simple, too, and you can learn some strange harmonies and progressions from their stuff -Gilmour's solos are tough, he is a very good guitarist (not so much technically as much as he plays with "soul"), but their harmonies are a great start, esp. around the Meddle - Dark Side - Wish You Were Here - Animals era.

I think the 1st song i ever learned was Elderly Woman behind the counter in a small town by Pearl Jam. Its just D, C, G then the bridge is C, A, Em
Another easy song is Last Kiss (covered by Pearl Jam)...it only has 4 chords - G, Em, C, D.
Wicked Game by Chris Isaak is Bm, A, E...very easy

The intro riff to Mother is really easy to play. It uses "power chords" and you can either play the 3 low strings E A and D or just E and A, which are the first 2 low strings. Check out the www.911tabs.com site for that one, trust me it's easy. Also try most Nirvana songs they are easy, and some Metallica intro riffs are easy to play as well.

Most anything by the White Stripes is simple...mainly power and barre chords, although you'll pick up the necessary speed eventually. "Fell in love with a girl" and "You're pretty good looking (for a girl)" are both fairly easy, once you get the hang of it.
a REALLY easy one is "Radio" by Alkaline Trio. seriously. (first link)
also, look up the tabs for "About a Girl" or "Polly" by Nirvana. those are both basic chords strung together. it gets a bit redundant, but again, you will catch on quickly.
try "Soul and Fire" or "Love is Stronger" by Sebadoh once you have your chord changes down. the rythyms are not difficult, and for the most part, it is composed of basic chords and changes. (latter two links)
good luck!

Mary had a little lamb is the easiest. It's the same keys as on the piano. Very easy to play.

Play the song "Jesus Loves You", you only need to know the cords D, A, and E. Hope that helps.
