We live in a time when the most extreme incarnation of either party is what we see and hear the most about. People portray GOP as fascists, homophobes, racists, warmongers, etc. People portray Democrats as pro-sin, pro-promiscuity AIDS infected gay loafers who don't take care of terrorism because they are a bunch of bleeding heart weaklings and lazy spongers off the welfare state.
In this nasty verbal environment, you surely understand that the spirit of truth is taking a severe beating every day... in the media and places like yahoo message boards, chat and answers. It's almost as if people think insults alone are going to do the work of discrediting and banishing their opponents -- they work that angle, overtime.
Democracy is hurting, if it is, because people aren't bright enough to see through all the invective and trashtalk. The weakminded, camp-followers and kids are the ones who will be deluded most in the current atmosphere. In turn, they become the most vocal cheerleaders for their recently "discovered" "truth." That's a lot of what you read on here.

Good question. Be careful about stereotyping though -- not all Republicans are fascists and not all democrats are socialists (although that comment made that democrats are conservative is WAY out there -- what planet is THAT person from?) True democracy is probably on the sideline because in any form of government the leading body (whether it is an electorate or "appointed" body) MUST be able to exercise some amount of control over the people, so the question becomes how much control does the government have. That doesn't apply well to the idea of democracy because democracy is supposed to be a government of the people, by the people, for the people -- and when your Average Joe sees that he thinks the government should bow to his will and is unjust if it passes any law or makes any rule that he doesn't like.
Therein lies the basic problem with government in general: You'll always have people who want the government to do more for the people than it already does, and you will always have people who want the government to have less power over John and Jane Q. Public (and sometimes you'll have people who want both).

If you want a rigouros answer then let it be clear that republicans are not fascists and democrats are not socialists. The very titles of the parties negate such a meaning. But, when you refer to `some people', where the spectrum is wide, then a seperation has to be made between propaganda and analysis. For the sake of clarity I would prefer the `high', learned and analyzed interpretations, where a case exists to factually demonstrate that,in many instances, the current US government has carried out policies of aggression comparable to fascist decisions. It is just a comparision.Even in the US whatever was achieved by the mass democracy of New Deal is being rolled back.I would prefer the term `inverted totalitarianism', used by an eminent professor [W Bello], to connect to the reality of what's going on.Democrats have majorly, if not totally, abandoned mass democracy [or the `original form of democracy mentioned by Aristotle in `The Politics'] . Currently, democracy is formally defined as the rule of the `best'while as we should know that barring exceptions, the `best'get counted quantitatively, by money and not according to virtueous dispositions, etc. This makes democracy nebulous, such as an oblong, thinly stretched loop hanging somewhere.

Republicans aren't fascist in any respect. You'll find more support for the hard limits on government power on the right than on the left.
But Democrats do embrace many socialist concepts, including the Euro-socialist welfare state concepts.
Democracy has nothing to do with this. Democracy is a method of determining government. People around the world elect socialists and communists and terrorists in democratic balloting. But socialism or fascism can also be implemented by monarchies, juntas, parliaments or dictators.
Government method and government philosophy are two different animals.

Your question is what's known as a false generalization. While I'd agree that SOME Republicans are fascists and SOME Democrats are socialists the terms don't apply to all of either party.

I don't accept the premise of your question. First of all, only the far right fringe of the Republican party would be considered fascist, and the far left fringe of the Democratic party would be considered socialist. Also, comparing democracy to fascism and socialism is like comparing apples and oranges. A "democracy" can contain elements of fascism as well as elements of socialism. Look at the US as an example. Illegal wiretapping and torture are symptoms of fascism, while social security, medicare and the interstate freeway system are examples of socialism. As a whole, however, the US system of government can be considered a form of democracy (at least in theory).

I dont believe your question is framed properly. It is possible that some Republicans are fascists and some democrats are socialists but most in both of those parties dont fit those labels. Obviously you have not been involved in many political discussions before. Do some reading and get back to me in a few years.

The screams of the far ends of the left and right don't matter.
The truth is we are a representative republic and guess what it will swing one way and back.
Today the average person has the attention span of kid with ADD after eating 2 bags of candy.
There is very little historical understanding in this country. You can tell that by the way the for example liberals use the term Hitler.

I understood your question before reading the added details.
Good question. True democracy, and most of the American people, are somewhere in the middle. Only the loud few get heard, the rest of us just listen and roll our eyes in disbelief at the extreme comments made by both sides.

Republicans aren't necessarily fascist, nor are democrats necessarily socialist. Those are extremes of the left-right political spectrum, and most people fall more into moderate classifications. Democracy is found in the cooperation of the left and the right in solving the issues facing their nation.
